Okay, so you've decoded the scratch. You know how the record hand and the fader hand synchronize
together, but how do you practice it? Well you should practice it, again, just like a
snare drummer would practice a rudiment. Start out very, very, very slowly. Like as slowly
as you can go until you can barely perceive rhythm. And once that sounds perfect at the
slowest tempo, you can start speeding it up. Let me give you an example. So for instance,
let's say we're practicing the backwards tear. It has three motions. The forward motion and
two backward motions. And you, I know it's really tempting to start out going as fast
as you possibly can, but then your muscles aren't going to be used to it, and it's going
to seem really awkward and you're not going to sound very clean. So start it as slowly
as you can. Even slower than that. And once you gain control of any specific scratch,
then you can start upping the tempo and working faster and faster.
