I remember how I always wanted to come aboard when I was about 7 years old.
I remember wondering how life would be in the UK.
I was fascinated with the outer world…
I didn’t realise then how multicultural my own environment was…
I still remember waking up to the morning prayers of the Mosque… When me being a Hindu child from birth knew the Adhan’s wordings.
How I got a red envelop which contained money, every Spring/Chinese new-year.
How the festival of colours was something I enjoyed with my friends…
How when my Muslim friends fasting for Ramadan resulted in me fasting with them.
How when I was fasting for Durga Puja my friends would fast with me…
How Baby Jesus always found a place in my home every 25th of December…
I live here now, 6000 miles away…
But live partly in the red Flamboyant flowers of the summer breeze….
I live partly in the Blue lagoons of the Mauritian sea….
I live partly, in the rays of the warm and yellow sun…
I live partly, looking at the vast green sugar cane fields of my country…
Amongst my crowded 22 years worth of memory, there is a mother country that I hold dear and hope that you have a very happy independence day…
Happy Independence Day to all Mauritian – (To those who celebrate it)
I MISS YOU MAURICE
