I always get asked what color to paint the ceiling. Well, it really depends on the situation.
I will do a white ceiling when we have dark walls, because white reflects light into this
space; and that's important when you have a dark space, especially a space that relies
only on natural light. I'll use a white ceiling when we need a bit of visual relief. We've
got lots of colorful elements within this space.
And I love a white ceiling when we have beautiful moldings to play up. I'll paint the ceiling
down on to the crown. Quite often, even the rest of the trim – the casings, the baseboard
– all the same color white to create just a beautiful, crisp, unified look.
I will use a color on a ceiling in a number of situations; like a room that is small.
I'll do a very soft muted wall color, continue it up on the ceiling so that the look is very
uninterrupted, keeping the contrast down.
I'll do a very dark color on the ceiling when we have a high ceiling situation, and that
creates kind of a feeling of intimacy and coziness. And when you do recessed lighting
against that surface, it's just beautiful. It's like a night sky.
And I love the look of soft bluey-grays. In a scheme that's relatively neutral, I'll do
that color up on the ceiling, and it creates this beautiful, ethereal feeling of airiness.
My favorite trim color, Benjamin Moore's cloud white – casings, baseboards. Quite often,
the ceiling I'll paint the same. This warm white works for it all.
