My name is Jadi from Jabiru Larrakia. I'm a
Larrakia/Warumungu man from the Northern Territory.
My family value education and they sat down and they taught
us that if you want to make a difference, if you want to - you
know - get far in this lifetime, don't sit around and
don't - you know - expect people to do things for you.
You have to get up and you have to do things for yourself,
and if you get educated you'll be able to get a good job,
and to be able to be happy and not poor. When I was getting
towards the end of my TAFE degree and my sister had
finished her degree and my mum was studying and, so they
encouraged me to consider going to the Australian National
University and doing a sociology degree to help
with what I wanted to do which was social work. You
know you have all these possibilities, you
have these different pathways to get into university,
and the impact of you going through to university,
getting those degrees may not seem much at the time when
you're thinking about it, but it will affect your family, it will
affect those around you and it will affect your own self
esteem and your own worth because you'll then feel
like you are of worth and you can do something.
