INTERVIEWER: When did you first start thinking about University?
When I got more
familiar with the creative courses
on there because I was phased as well as
my family being a bit phased that it was too academic
for my style of learning
But my college encouraged me saying that there were more degrees and stuff
on offer for people who are
more into visual learning and stuff
so that gave me the confidence to go ahead
and make a course.
Because of my autism, I found that
I had a lot of communication difficulty
like making eye contact and understanding figures of speech
sense of humor and that kind of social thing was a bit
too advanced for me to catch up with at first
so the basis of my communication
before I could talk, I had a lot of delayed speech
and language skills
I used books and illustration as a major
foundation of communicating
and that's what got me into creative courses. I'm quite passionate about working with that.
INTERVIEWER: And did you find that
INTERVIEWER: there was anyone that though perhaps you wouldn't be able to go to University
INTERVIEWER: and that it wasn't for you?
Yes, at first my Mum had her doubts because
in her day when she went to Uni
there were a lot more academic courses
and she said
that maybe it would be
too difficult to keep up with the pace and
the style of learning
at that time, but it's
definitely widened over time they've made more styles of courses.
Lots of staff at college gave me advice and unistats is a really good website
for checking statistics and opinions from students
and tutors
so you get enthusiasm
or different opinions
from both sides.
INTERVIEWER: And how did that help with your mum?
She was encouraged as well because
at first she thought it was all academic and a bit too intimidating
so both us us were learning what University was
INTERVIEWER: So you learned together?
Yes, it definitely got us closer.
INTERVIEWER: So if you were saying to and somebody who was in school or college now
INTERVIEWER: and was thinking about HE, what would you say to them?
That it's definitely worth
the investment of money and time
and
if you have the opportunity never take it for granted
because it's a really good thing
to start life with.
