KPOP Music Mondays with Simon and Martina
This week Music Monday will have you staying up all night with Yoseop's Caffeine
Ok, so we've jokingly calling him the tiny one from B2ST for the longest time but
I think we're gonna change that now and call him by his actual name, Yoseop
I do reserve the right however to say his name at the speed of my choosing
In which case I'm gonna call him... YO SUP
I can't foresee anything wrong with that
HEY... G-DRAGON!
YO! SUP!
Hey, What's up?
What... Wasn't even talking to you.. What was I was talking about..
Lame name jokes aside
Let's talk about the song
For starters, let's just say, flat out
we both unanimously agree that this
is one of the best songs of the year
It comes as a last Music Monday of the year
since we're not doing one next week
It's Christmas! We gotta get ready for Christmas!
And a week after that we gotta prepare for
the Eat Your Kimchi Awards
That beign said, this beign our last reviewed song for 2012
It's also the prettiest song of the year in my opinion
The acoustic noodling as perfectly complemented by the use of voice
which sounds so uncertain at first, but then
when the piano kicks and Yoseop's falsettos are just bloody lovely
But it didn't stay as a plane old acoustic ballad song
Oh no! It kicked it up a knotch
when swinging between a slow ballad
and a faster pace poppy jazz ballad
and that simple addition of the clean synth during the chorus
was FANTASTIC!
We can honestly say, with the exception of
SO BEAUTIFUL, MY GIRL
we've liked every single song B2ST has ever put out
but this just bumped Fiction out of its first place spot in our hearts
Now the video itself, we loved from the color
to the costumes, to the props, to the editing
to the sutil use of the floating Yoseop effect
The whole theme of the song lyrically matched the aesthetic of the video
and that is something sorrowly lacking in the KPOP world
We most often see KPOP videos where the fashion
is just in it for fashion's sake
The costumes designer seem to be competing
for "Who can make the most obnoxiously bizarre clothing?"
but in this video the wardrobe totally fits the whole feeling of the video
while still beign fashionable.
Even though the suits were odd looking
they matched the dark sad feel of what Yoseop was going through
That black and white stripes suit really had
like a Beetlejuice feel to it.
And that little pearl covered suit had a kind of a
Day of the Dead - Sugar Skull look to it.
And yes, this video was filmed inside of a studio but
I didn't get that feeling.
With funky black and white geometric skull rooms
High ceiling palace like rooms and
the well designed geometric attic like home
I wasn't visually bored at all.
Even the props, from the skulls to the []
play in with the sheep, and burning your baggage
it all has meaning and relates back to the song
OH MEN, SO WELL DONE!
This could have been perfect, really.
It's an almost perfect video that we would have had
nothing to complain about, which, as you might know
is really rare for us for a Music Monday, this could've been it.
But it isn't for one giant hideous reason.
As for the English of this song, I give this a big fat heartie zero out of 5.
The zero is so big i could hula hoop in it.
The zero is so big I could fill it with water and then
jump off of a diving board into it and still be safe in the water.
Seriously, the English of this song is so heart-breaking, it upsets me actually
cause, really, this was such a beautiful song, and it
just ruined for me, RUINED.
"You better me, so better me, Oh girl you like a caffeine"
Now, I know someone watching this video is gonna be like:
"Oh, well, that's not actually what's written in the lyrics"
But it doesn't really matter what was written, what matters is
what we hear because this is a song, this isn't a written poem.
And what I hear is a gramatical nonsensycal nightmare.
The reason why I am upset is serious.
This really is a kind of song that I want to introduce my non-kpop friends to.
It's a perfect sounded song with a beautiful artistic well thoughtout video
and I'd be proud to show it to others to try to get them into kpop
Q serious music.
but if I cringe at the English other people
who aren't as invested in KPOP as I am, perhaps, not as open minded
will just outride laugh at it and dismiss it
They would laugh and they wouldn't be able to appreciate it as a result
And that is such a shame.
There's so much ruined potential for such a lovely song.
And for that I'm really upset.
And that's why we're always commenting on
the English for a KPOP Music Mondays.
It has nothing to do with the individual kpop idol as a person.
We're just hoping that KPOP Companies would just spend
an extra 20 damn minutes to look over their english
and swipe it out if it sucks.
It's not impossible, JYP does it and YG does it too.
Sure, B2ST will do great without caring about their English
Their loyal KPOP fans don't give a crap and Yes.
They're doing phenomenously well in Korea, where
to a lot of their audience bad english doesn't matter.
The use of English, even if it's wrong is cool.
But this could've been bigger than just Korea.
And instead, It will forever be used as an
example of bad english on KPOP songs.
And it breaks my heart. B2ST this could've been great.
