Discussions are a collaboration area where you can post, read and reply to messages on different topics, share thoughts about course materials, ask questions, share files, or work with classmates on assignments.
To access Discussions, select Discussions from the Assessments drop-down menu on the navigation bar or select a Link to a discussion forum or topic from Content.
Selecting a link from content will take you directly to the forum or topic associated with the link.

In the Discussion List, you will see a list of the available forums and topics in a course. Forums are used to organize discussions into categories, and Topics are the areas of discussions where the actual posting of messages and replies takes place.

Select a Topic to enter it.
Messages in a topic are displayed in the order that they are posted. Replies will appear under the original message and are indented. To view a message click on the subject, the message will appear in the reading pane below the messages. Clicking on a message will mark the message as read.

To create a new discussion post, select Discussions from the assessments drop-down menu on the navigation bar. Next, select the Topic Thread you wish to post to within a discussion forum. This will open the topic. Once the topic is open, select Compose from the toolbar. This will open a new window.

Enter your message title in the Subject Textbox and then enter your message content in the Message box, which includes HTML editing options such as bold, color, etc.

Once your message has been drafted, you may select to subscribe to this topic, which will deliver updates to you when a new post has been added to the topic. Updates will arrive in your Desire2Learn email.

Students may also attach files to their discussion posts by using the Add a File button and then uploading your file. You may either drag-and-drop a file or use the Upload File option.

Students may also add an audio recording to a discussion post by selecting the Record Audio button. Please note that you must have a microphone attached or built into your computer and you must have Adobe Flash installed. The recorder will load and you will be able to record a four-minute audio file. You will need to allow Flash to have access to your microphone.

Once you have composed your message and selected the appropriate options, select Post to submit the message. It will be added to the list of messages in the topic.

This will open a new message screen that already has the subject line filled in and includes the original post. You may type your reply above the original post and then select the post button to add your reply to the topic.

Students may subscribe to discussions in order to receive notifications of new message posts in their email accounts. To Subscribe to Discussion Notifications, select Subscribe next to the topic or forum you want to receive notifications from.
