Doug: When we look at society, most people are living their normal everyday lives mildly
dehydrated. That mild dehydration might have some influence on their cognitive function,
it might influence their mood, it might influence their motivation to do other things that maybe
would be good for them and their health. I think in general, we need to try to encourage
people.
A key factor that's brought up time and time again is accessibility to the water. Having
the water bottle within arm's reach during the core part of your day, which is your work
day, is going to allow you thrive and perform better, and feel better.
Matt: The key question is how do you tell when you're dehydrated? There are cues that
you can think of, or symptoms that you can think of, during competition as well as during
training, but either way, they remain relatively similar. There are obviously objective cues:
Shade of urine, body weight after exercise. Even as you're in the moment, how do you actually
understand you might be dehydrated? When you're actually in a race or a training session,
if you start to lose motivation, if you start to lose focus, your mind starts wandering,
I always say that's always calories. When I say that, its calories and hydration, really;
because that has a key lock-in. In daily life the same thing occurs; if you start to get
cranky, you start to get moody, you start to get fatigued or tired, it's not necessarily
food or sugar you need, it's often hydration.
Kate: What I tell people are some common cues, is first of all, fatigue. If you're feeling
a mid-morning or a mid-afternoon; those are those two times of day where we start to have
that lull, often times a sip from your water bottle is going to be more effective than
running to the vending machine or grabbing a cup of coffee, because you're actually dehydrated.
You're not hungry, even though your body sends you a little bit of a mixed message. Thirst,
that's obviously another indicator. Frankly, if you're thirsty, you're already dehydrated,
which means your performance is already sagging.
