My name is Bob Freidel. I am a senior, and I am studying Biochemistry, getting certificates
in Business and Leadership. Coming to Madison is a bit of a family tradition. I am a third
generation Badger. My grandma went here, my dad went here, and now I am here. Growing
up I was surrounded with Badger Spirit. I almost didn't have to think twice about
going anywhere else.
Freidel, in his second year as a housefellow at Ogg Hall, started the Wisconsin Spirit
Initiative this fall, to help students find a connection with the University.
The Wisconsin Spirit Initiative is a project intended to help students engage in their
Wisconsin experiences, to learn about the Wisconsin Idea, and to learn about how they
identify with Wisconsin Spirit.
Freidel has come up with interesting and unusual ways to implement his initiative and engage
students on campus.
We've developed a series of programs for that. First we're having UW trivia night,
and that is meant to help students really learn about what is so special about the university.
Freidel has used his position as a housefellow to further promote the Wisconsin Spirit Initiative.
The Wisconsin Spirit Initiative is important because it helps students be inspired to maximize
their Wisconsin experience. They will feel like they are part of something important.
So, to become very active in what they are doing here, for them to reflect upon all the
things that they are learning here, and how that is going to help them solve 21st century
issues when they graduate. After college, I am going to try to go to med school, and
to not only be a physician, but to learn about issues and healthcare and how they can be
improved and changed. How we can bring quality healthcare to more people. In essence, it
will be living the Wisconsin Idea.
