Hi, we are back with Step 2 from the Optimal Living Program. We have sent the chapter to
you electronically. In Step 2, I cover the importance of certain life-long supplements
that everybody should take from the age of 16 and on. These three supplements are a high
potency multi vitamin and mineral as well as an essential fatty acids supplement with
the right combination of oils, and ground flaxseed.
With respect to lifelong supplements, by age 16, everybody should be on a high potency
multi vitamin and mineral that is enriched with extra antioxidants and a B-50 Complex.
There is a lot of controversy about this. Some doctors say, "You can get everything
you need from food. Supplements might be dangerous". However, reality is that the body of evidence
is so strong and compelling for supplementation. Certain supplements can really decrease your
risks of many degenerative illnesses and slow the aging process to a very significant degree.
In this chapter, I cover the research that highlights this information so you can make
the best informed decision about what is best for you. In regards to a high potency multi
vitamin and mineral, it should be enriched with extra antioxidants such as vitamin C,
E and beta carotene. I explain dosages in this chapter. These supplements have been
shown to help reduce the free radical damage that gets done to the body. These antioxidants,
and there is evidence to support this, can reduce the risks of certain types of cancer
and reduce the likelihood of developing Alzheimer's or dementia as one ages. They are also found
to reduce the risk of cataracts and macular degeneration, which is the leading cause of
blindness in people over the age of fifty-five. As one ages, their immune system becomes weaker.
These antioxidants have been shown to support the immune system.
The B-50 complex that I talked about is very important for the prevention of heart disease.
It also makes your genetic material stronger. The chromosomal linkages are stronger. There
is less likelihood that they will break and result in cancerous mutations. We talk about
how the B vitamins are used in the brain to make certain chemicals for memory and normal
cognition. The B vitamins are needed for energy and red blood cell production. The right high
potency multivitamin and mineral supplement should have optimal doses of antioxidants,
a B-50 complex and also have nutrients to support bone density.
One in four women and one in eight men develop osteoporosis after the age of fifty. It is
one of the leading causes of serious quality of life issues and death as people get older.
Their bones literally cave in because of demineralization and fractures. Proper bone support is a necessity.
The right dosages of certain vitamins and minerals in a high potency multi vitamin are
extremely important in this regard. The second lifelong supplement that I cover
is the right combination of essential fatty acids. We know today that we have over ingestion
of Omega 6 fats and not enough of Omega 3 fats. Most people know this. However, there
is one Omega 6 fat that we do need to get from supplementation. As I explain in the
chapter, it helps to reduce inflammation, and also makes skin soft and smooth, reducing
skin and complexion problems. Overall, the right combination of essential fatty acids
helps to reduce the risk of heart disease. It slows the rate in which cells divide, which
is important in terms of reducing your risk of cancer down the road. The brain also needs
these essential fatty acids. They have been linked to a reduction in risk of Alzheimer's
disease as people get older. So, as you can see, the right combination of essential fatty
acids from a supplement is important. I cover all of this in Step 2.
The final lifelong supplement that I cover in this chapter is ground flaxseed. You take
flaxseeds and grind them or you can buy them already ground. They contain a fiber that
helps clean the colon and may reduce the risk of colon cancer. Flaxseed contains the kind
of fiber that lowers cholesterol, helping you to reduce the risk of heart disease. There
are also special ingredients or bio-active constituents in flaxseed that have been shown
to be important in terms of reducing risk of breast cancer. They have been shown to
reverse breast disease in women. The male prostate gland and the endometrium of the
uterus in women are also benefited by flaxseed. I suggest that individuals, both men and women
take two heaping tablespoons of ground flaxseed a day. I give you the evidence to support
this in Step 2. So, in Step 2 you are going to learn that
in addition to eating healthy, you also need to take three lifelong supplements: the high
potency multi vitamin, the essential fatty acids supplement and ground flaxseed every
day. I explain the science to support the use of these life-long supplements in Step
