How is ICT changing the way you learn?
I think ICT is empowering students because it, lets you get information anywhere, and it sort of broadens the horizons of the kind
of information you can get. It opens up access to the rest of the world. We have an online
environment where all course materials go and we have access to it from home or on the
go. I can access it on my phone or wherever I need it to be. The whole campus is wireless
enabled, so technology is pretty much everywhere.
It kind of breaks down the kind of stigma I suppose of the lecturer being holier than thou. It kind of brings the level down a bit
so you can develop a relationship that is based on photography rather than have this
hierarchy of student/ lecturer you know?
You know being a mother, a grandparent, a nurse and a student midwife, it's really, really important that I can access the university
at times that suits me.
ICT has made our life a lot easier in the education system in a way that we can do things way faster and in a much easier and more convenient
way. But one of negative sides, from my experience, is that learning, ah, getting knowledge from
a wiser teacher is the most satisfying mode of learning, whereas now the teachers are
more of a learning guide, so it's not the same anymore.
Sitting in front of a tutor in a lecturer and you miss something, it's gone, the moment
has disappeared and there may not be the opportunity to bring it back, but with a virtual education
system, you can fast forward and you can rewind to your needs, to your specific needs.
