Working and buildings steam locomotives is the passion of mine.
most of the thing I do on.. the
locomotives, it just comes to me naturally.
My grandfather, he started as an apprentice fitter on the NSW railways. My Dad
went to work with him occasionally. He then got involved with the zig-zag railway,
and that's how i started to get involved.
I was probably about three or four.
I grew up always looking at, watching and
riding on steam locomotives.
The most fascinating thing was the sound to start with.
And then watching all the
rods and wheels in motion.
I've always wanted to
work on steam locomotives and steam engines.
Through the Powerhouse I'm able to do it.
Chris' Manager: “The Powerhouse Museum
is part of the NSW public sector.”
“We're all public servants, but we just seem to have an odd job.”
“Christopher's role is to look after, interpret and demonstrate to the public.”
“He's slotted straight in and we're keeping Chris
very very busy.”
The Powerhouse Museum likes to
let the public see
as much as possible.
And by us reinstalling engines upstairs
it gives the public a chance to talk to us
we can show them the insides of engines that we have a apart as well as just the operation.
Lots and lots of the hours by many people
go in behind the scenes to do conservation work, restoration work and preservation work.
The real benefit in keeping everything running was really just to show people
how it was; how the whole world got to where it is now, cause it all started with
steam engines.
I enjoy passing on the knowledge to people that admire the engines
and how they would work
but don't normally see these engines operating -
maybe the first time they've seen them operate.
If you're interested in getting into the sort of industry
I'd recommend
getting involved with a... preservation society or even the
Powerhouse Museum as a volunteer.
And that's a great step to
seeing what's required of the job.
The guys I work with have been doing it a lot longer than I've been alive.
And I'm learning a great deal of stuff
knowledge and skills for them.
It's very enjoyable,
lots of hard work, long days.
But very rewarding at the end.
