Let's talk about UALR's Developmental Course
policy and eligibility requirements for scholarships
and grants.
0:00:08.000,0:00:14.066
You already know that you must earn credit for 3
modules within a semester to earn a
0:00:14.066,0:00:22.000
passing grade. What happens when you don’t
earn three modules of credit…your grade is
0:00:22.000,0:00:30.000
a NC (no credit) and repeating the course may
be an option. The word “may” is used very
0:00:30.000,0:00:38.000
intentionally. Because UALR doesn’t allow
students to continually repeat a developmental
course.
0:00:38.000,0:00:45.033
The UALR policy on Developmental Courses
states that students may not take any
developmental
course at UALR more than twice. The Pre-Core
Mathematics courses (Math 0321, Math 0322,
0:00:54.000,0:01:03.000
Math 0323, Math 0324) are each developmental
math courses for which this policy will be
0:01:03.000,0:01:11.000
enforced. This means that if you earn an NC or
W for Pre-Core Math I, then you must
0:01:11.000,0:01:17.000
pass Pre-Core Math I the next time you take the
course, or you will have to find another
means to meet the pre-requisites for your
college-credit math class.
0:01:22.033,0:01:29.066
The same is true for Pre-Core Math II, Pre-Core
Math III, or Pre-Core Math IV.
0:01:29.066,0:01:35.066
I do not believe I will need to enforce this policy if
a student has given their best effort in the
0:01:35.066,0:01:42.066
class. We have designed the program for
student success in the course and in their next
math class. But the purpose for the policy is to
make sure that if our program is not
working for a student, they find an alternative to
prepare for their core math course.
0:01:56.000,0:02:03.000
Now, near the beginning of your syllabus you’ll
find this statement. “Some scholarships
0:02:03.000,0:02:09.066
and grants require developmental/remedial
courses to be completed within a certain
number of hours. It is a student’s responsibility
to be familiar with all
restrictions related to their scholarships and
grants.” The courses in the Pre-Core
Mathematics Program again are
developmental/remedial courses. Remember,…
0:02:28.000,0:02:37.066
For you, the program requires completion of
Modules 1 through 8 or Modules 1 through 10,
0:02:37.066,0:02:42.033
depending on the next math course you plan to
take to satisfy your core math
requirement for your degree. To complete this
work, there are four courses available to
give you the maximum time to do this. To pass a
semester of Pre-Core Math, you are only
0:02:56.033,0:03:03.000
required to complete three modules. If you need
all 10 modules and complete three
modules each semester, you would need four
semesters to complete the program. Now, for
0:03:09.033,0:03:17.033
the warning…many scholarships and grants
have restrictions on the time allowed to complete
0:03:17.033,0:03:24.000
developmental/remedial courses. To
demonstrate, I gather two pieces of information.
0:03:24.000,0:03:32.033
One of the continued eligibility requirements for
the Arkansas Challenge Scholarship is that
you must have successfully completed all
remedial (developmental) courses within
the first 30 semester hours. For most students
this would give you two semesters to
complete the Pre-Core Math Program.
0:03:49.000,0:03:58.000
From UALR’s website, a renewal requirement for
UALR academic scholarships has a similar
statement.
0:03:58.000,0:04:04.000
So, even though the Pre-Core Mathematics
Programs have a four course sequence
available to complete the work…this may not be
an option for you if you need to renew a
scholarship or grant.
0:04:14.000,0:04:21.066
It is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to know the
requirements and stipulations for all
0:04:21.066,0:04:27.000
scholarships/grants/money you receive from
sources outside your home. Many of them also
have GPA and credit hour restrictions to continue
receiving the assistance.
0:04:35.033,0:04:42.000
So, if you are unsure about the requirements, you
need to find out now!!! Don’t wait until
0:04:42.000,0:04:45.033
it’s too late to remedy the situation.
0:04:45.033
Now, it’s time to work for those renewal
requirements by doing the math.
