After you've done that first assignment, you're going to start to feel like you want to actually
be able to start lettering meaningful statements. So let's talk about what your first assignment
might be. What I would ask of a student in an actual classroom situation is that you
choose a quotation that has some special meaning for you, and because you're going to be doing
this in the Roman capitals, I'm asking that you keep it serious. Yes, you can do anything
that you want with the Roman capitals in terms of what kind of expressiveness they're going
to have. You can make them funny if you want to. But until you have the Roman, the serious,
dignified Roman down, I would say don't go for the funny stuff. So here's an example
of the lettering at least, of a word, which is a beautiful, serious word: gratitude. And
what I have here is a piece that I have chosen to be on the page in a certain way. And you
know what? It has a tone to it. This is what I would consider to be like a gray tone and
this is more of a black. So this piece actually has a tone to it. But I suppose you're wondering
where you're going to get these quotes from. So let's talk about that.
