Welcome to the GSLIS Instructional Technology
and Design video tutorial,
Troubleshooting Audio in Blackboard Collaborate
An essential part of every LEEP session is audio.
Both students and instructors use the audio
in live sessions to interact with participants,
give feedback,
and ask questions.
This video should help you prepare yourself
for using audio in the live sessions
and get the most out of your online experience.
When entering any live session,
you should always run the Audio Setup Wizard.
This tool configures your sound input and output
for every session
and can be accessed a number of ways.
In the audio and video panel in left corner
of the Blackboard window,
there should be a small microphone icon
with a red asterisk.
This is the Audio Setup Wizard button.
This wizard can also be found in the
Blackboard Collaborate menu under Tools ->
-> Audio
-> Audio Setup Wizard
Often, connecting your headset and microphone
will be solved by running this wizard,
adjusting your computer's volume,
or by adjusting the volume on your headset
in Blackboard Collaborate using the
Audio and Video panel sliders.
You will also want to make sure that
your headset is not muted,
which can be found on the headset itself,
or on your computer settings.
However, there may be other ways to troubleshoot
audio problems in Blackboard Collaborate.
We will go through some common problems,
and the usual solutions associated with them.
For example, you may enter a live session,
run the Audio Setup Wizard,
but cannot hear anything,
even though the instructor is present.
It may be the case that the instructor has not
begun speaking.
When someone is talking in the live session,
a blue microphone icon will appear next to
his or her name in the Participants window.
If no microphone is present,
odds are that no one is speaking yet.
If the microphone indicates that someone is
speaking and you still have no sound,
make sure your computer's sound settings are
configured using your headset and microphone.
This varies by operating system,
but in most cases, Mac users can find their
sound settings in System Preferences -> Sound
Windows users can find their sound settings in
the Control Panel -> Hardware -> Sound
Similar audio problems like echoes can be
solved by configuring your headset and
internal sound using the Audio Setup Wizard
in computer settings.
Echoes indicate speaker sounds replaying back
into an internal microphone.
Sometimes, a speaker's speech may be
high-pitched or sound faster than
their normal speaking level.
This is due to a lag in connection speed.
It would also be denoted by a red or orange
microphone icon by the participant's name.
You can change your connection speed under the
Blackboard Collaborate menu under
Preferences ->
Session ->
Connection ->
and choose a lower speed.
Either Wireless or Dial-Up work best.
You may also find that you cannot hear any other
sounds from the session when you are talking,
including other speakers who may be speaking.
This is due to a setting change in Blackboard.
To allow simultaneous speaking in Blackboard,
go to the Blackboard Collaborate menu,
Preferences ->
Audio / Video ->
Speaker Settings
Uncheck the "Mute speakers when..." box.
Click apply, and then close.
If you are still having trouble with audio in a
Blackboard Collaborate session,
