bjbj Hello everyone and welcome to another episode of EricksonTV. Curtis here with Lauren.
I was reading an article in the paper today called Reinventing Retirement in the US Today
here on January 30, 2013. We have touched on different parts of this subject matter
in the past. One of the benefits of being in a firm that has a long legacy of previous
partners is that we have many clients that are at different ages and stages of life.
So we ve had the honor of seeing how they ve dealt with retirement; when they just start
retirement, when they are farther along in their retirement, and at the end of their
retirement. Some of these things are pretty obvious when they talk about keys to a happy,
healthy retirement but here is one interesting statistic: they did a study comparing people
age 50 or older that are retired versus 50 or older that are still working. They determined
that the people who stopped working had a 40% higher chance of having a heart attack.
That was really shocking. That s a big number. They talked about the two key things and,
again, we have talked about this in different segments before. The first of course is exercise
and it doesn t have to be a strenuous, hard-core, 2-hour a day exercise. It could be 10 or 20
minutes a day of exercise, just to move. An interesting thing they said is that exercise
just for the sake of exercise may not always work because you might lose interest. The
goal is to find an activity that can get you moving. There is a good example in here about
a gentleman that retired who was an active bicyclist. But he got bored with biking. What
he did was get really innovative. He set up an online, social group in a local town in
Virginia that is now up to 800 people. All they do is pick out an activity for the day.
They say, Hey, we re going to walk on this trail for a half an hour and go wine tasting
in the middle of it. Or, re going to walk to this restaurant to eat for breakfast. And
there are a lot of benefits to doing that. First of all, you get to do something new
every time, which is a big, big part of why it makes you happy. And second, you make new
friends. Part two of the key to a healthy retirement is the social aspect. That is key;
to have social interaction. And not just to have good friends, but to be making new friends.
There is a benefit to health and happiness to constantly expanding your social circle.
Of course you want to keep your good friends, but for people who make new friends, there
is strong correlation with being happier and living longer. There s a big trend nationally
that I ve been reading about which is these age-restricted retirement communities. Some
of the early ones that started back in the 1960s were started by a man named Del Webb,
owner of a big construction company. Now there s a big one in Florida called The Villages.
That is a huge community with over almost 100,000 people. This is an age-restricted
community where one member of the household has to be 55 or older. Initially I was thinking
that maybe the draw was because they just want to hang around people their own age but
I think what s going on there really is that these communities set a central focus on daily
activities. The fact that it is age-restricted generally means that at least one member of
the household has stopped working so you can always find someone that is available to do
something with you. It s not because they are all the same age. ve noticed that these
age-restricted communities are starting to come to Washington State now. There s one
over in Redmond called Trilogy, there s one down in the Tacoma area, and there are a couple
down in Olympia. But the point is that what this gentleman did with social media is not
dependent upon living in an age-restricted community. He s working in the current town
he is living in and he s setting up new ways to meet new friends and do fun things. Retirement
is more than just about money. Right, did we say one thing about money today? We didn
t say one thing about money! Well, until I blew it there. So to end this episode, I don
t think it s about having to move into one of these age-restricted communities. It s
about having a way to stay in your local community, to figure out a way to move a little bit,
and also how to have social interaction. Thank you for watching this episode of EricksonTV
