When I'm picking colors for clients, there are several things that I take into consideration.
First of all, I look at the elements that are in the space, the big impact elements
– fabric, drapery fabric, upholstery, carpets – and try to pull a color out of those elements
so that there's a visual relationship, a language spoken between the elements in the space and
the large elements – the wall and the ceilings that contain the space.
When I'm selecting colors for small spaces, I look for colors that will minimize the contrast
between all the surfaces in the room. It's contrast that interrupts your eye as you look
around a space; and that's what's makes a space seem small. I also tend to gravitate
to lighter colors. They reflect more light and they help create an open airy feeling.
