Welcome to Cengage Learning’s “How do I get my test banks into Blackboard using
Cognero?” This is an installment of the Digital Course Support self-training video
series for Instructors.
Our agenda for this video is to guide you through the steps of
Exporting your test bank from Cognero. Importing your test bank into Blackboard by using a
Cognero exported bank, or by using test bank files from your Cengage instructor companion
site, and lastly, creating a test from your new bank.
Once you have opened a test or test bank in Cognero, from the Editor Pane, select File
and Export and then Blackboard 7.1+. This will create a zip file with the bank
of questions. Choose to save it to your hard drive, flash drive, or network drive. For
this example I’ll save to my Desktop because it’s easiest to locate.
If available, you can also use the test bank files located in your Instructor Companion
site. Open the Instructor Companion site from inside your Instructor Resource Center account
at Cengage. Locate the Test Bank link on the left, read and accept the licensing agreement,
and then choose to save the “Blackboard Test Bank Files.” These will include all
the chapter test banks for your text book. Please note, to upload the chapter test banks,
you must extract them from the zip file, and upload chapter by chapter.
Next, log into your Blackboard Instructor account and navigate to the course you wish
to import the test bank into. Once you have selected the course, under the “Course Management”
area in the left side navigation pane, expand the Control Panel, and then expand Course
Tools. Select “Tests, Surveys, and Pools” from the list.
When the “Tests, Surveys, and Pools” screen opens, click on “Pools.” You will now
be in the “Import Pools” screen. Under the “Pools Import” heading, click “Browse
My Computer.” Locate and select the question bank you exported from Cognero or downloaded
from your Instructor Companion Site.
You’ll see the file name you selected in the screen. Click Submit.
The next screen will show “Pool Import Complete” along with the information that the process
has been completed, processed, and logged.
We’re now ready to create an assessment using our newly imported question bank. To
do this, first make sure that Edit Mode is on. Then click on the course content area
that you wish to put your quiz. Select the Assessments tab, and the select “Test.”
In Step 1, click “Create a New Test.” In the “Test Information” screen, type
a name for your test, and optionally, any description or instructions you wish to provide.
Click Submit when finished.
In the “Test Canvas” screen, select the “Reuse Questions” tab, and then “Find
Questions”. When the “Find Questions” screen opens, and under the “Browse Criteria”
area on the left, expand the “Pools” option and click on your new pool. The right side
of the window will refresh, and your new pool of questions will load. You can choose to
“Select All” questions, or hand-pick individual questions by selecting the checkbox next to
each. You will also be able to preview the questions, see what type of question it is,
the point value, and source type. Click Submit when finished.
You will be brought back to the Test Canvas pane where you can further edit your questions
and test preferences.
Remember, you will need to repeat this process to import additional chapter test banks into
your Blackboard course. Thanks for taking the time to review this
self-training video and we hope you found it helpful. Be sure to check out our other
self-training videos and resources at Cengage Digital Course Support.
