At least 39 people have been killed following a series
of military sweeps across Maiduguri, Nigeria late Wednesday night and early Thursday morning.
The sweeps were reportedly the latest attempt by the Nigerian army and police to combat
the Islamist militant group Boko Haram. CNN reports …
“Amnesty International
says more than 30 people in a northern Nigerian town have been killed some shot execution
style.”
An activist with Nigeria’s Civil Liberties Organization told The New
York Times …
“They accused the young persons of being Boko Haram members, with
no evidence. In the presence of parents, they killed the children. They told the parents
to turn back and look in a different direction, then they killed the children. This is military
criminality.They killed people without any evidence of offense.”
Since 2009, nearly
3,000 people have been killed in conflicts with the Boko Haram. The BBC reports …
“The
who’s name whose name means ‘western education is forbidden’ is fighting to overthrow the
government and establish an Islamic state. It’s attempted to enforce Sharia law in
several regions and attack churches.”
This most recent attack happened just a day after
Amnesty International accused Nigeria of abuses during a crackdown of the Boko Haram. They
group said …
“Hundreds of people accused of having links to Boko Haram have
been arbitrarily detained by a combination of the Joint Task Force (JTF) – a combined
forces group commissioned by the President to restore law and order in areas affected
by Boko Haram - the State Security Service (SSS) and the police.”
A Nigerian
Military spokesman said the incident is under investigation.
