Hi everyone, I just wanted to take a few minutes
and welcome you to Reading 10, the online course
at College of the Redwoods, where we're going to be covering the book at the year selection.
Now, as you probably already know (hopefully) this year's book at the
year was by
Jim Dodge, and it's "Fup." Jim Dodge is a local
author and he's also a professor at Humboldt State University. Now,
if you've picked up the book which is available all over town and at the
bookstore on campus,
the first thing you probably noticed is that the book is pretty short!
In fact, the book is only 52 pages long. So maybe one of the first question that
you have is
what are we going to be doing for 10 weeks to cover a 52-page novel?
Well, I've created a really interesting course I think you are going to find
very enjoyable and get a lot out of this semester. We are gonna start out
reading "Fup," and then we're going to be doing some work getting to know the author
a little bit better,
looking at his other works, and then looking at other sources of information
that tie into the themes
from the book. The course is set up so that every week you will be completing
some kind of activity,
whether that's reading assignments or watching a video, and then you're going to be posting
to public discussion forum where you are going to be engaging with the other students
and sharing your ideas
and analysis about what you've experienced that week.
So what do you get started? Well, the first thing you want to do is
download the syllabus. Now if you've taken an online classes before you already know
this
but for the rest of you, all of the navigation links everything you need to
do in MyCR
is located on the left hand side, navigation bar.
Right there you're going to see links. And one of the first ones is the
syllabus. Just click on that and download the syllabus. Then you're gong to want
to read that syllabus from start to finish.
There's a lot of really good information in there, beyond just
how to get a hold of me, and how many units this course is worth,
there's lots of really useful links on how to be successful
in online classes, how to write essays and other study tips
and at the end of the syllabus, you're going to see that there's a Course Calendar
that explains what we are going to be doing, every single day and every single week in the class.
It will give you the due dates for every single assignment
right up front so you know what we're going to be doing and you can plan ahead.
Now, once you get through that you're going to want to explore
the rest the course. Other areas you're definitely going to want to look at
are the discussion area, where you will find that there are two discussion forums
open for you.
The first one is the week's one discussion, where you're going to be
posting your introduction.
And the second one is one for any course questions.
If at any time in class you have any questions about what we're doing
about how the class is actually working or maybe about what you've read,
and you wanted more information
please post those questions publicly so I can answer them
for everyone in the class because if you have a question probably somebody else
has a question too.
Now, if you have a question about something you consider private
or about a grade,
please contact me about that privately using email
or the internal messaging system within MyCR. Other areas you're going to want to
check out for sure is the resources area where
I've given you supplemental study guides and I've provided more links
for you
that I would like you to take a look at this week as well if you have
some time.
Um, the only thing I want to mention is that I am local
and I'm on campus at College of the Redwoods in Eureka
Monday through Thursday. If you would ever like to be with me personally to discuss
something
I'm happy to set up an office hour to meet with you. If you are not local or if you
can't get to campus
I'm also happy to meet with you online doing a video conference.
I have software such as FaceTime and Skype, and there is other software
available as well
we can set up a video chat and then discuss
any questions you concerns you have about the class at any time.
So that's all I have I to do except again
welcome you to the class. I think you're really gonna get a lot out of it.
I'm very excited about what we're gonna be doing over the next 10 weeks
and I hope you are too.
I look forward to meeting you online!
