JEFF HELLMER: Jazz.
America's great original art form is full of creativity and innovation.
What makes jazz unique is artists coming together to create music in the
moment, communicating through the art of improvisation, celebrating freedom,
democracy, and teamwork.
The endless possibilities of this expressive music have captivated
listeners the world over.
This course will enhance your enjoyment of jazz, helping you develop
an informed understanding and deep appreciation of the art.
You'll develop your ability to describe the jazz you hear and to
identify the musical tools the jazz players use to create their art.
You'll learn to hear the differences between the colorful eras of jazz from
the swing era, to hard bop, to free and modal jazz.
You'll learn to recognize the greatest jazz soloists from Louis Armstrong to
Charlie Parker to John Coltrane.
You'll also improve your understanding of how jazz works so you can
understand the flow and structure of jazz performances.
You'll gain knowledge about the rich history of this music and how that
history intertwines with developments in American society.
