DIY Sunshine MIKE EDWARDS: I'm Mike Edwards, the company
is Home Improvement Doctor limited, and the website is www.diydoctor.org.uk. It's May
the 10th, we've had two weeks of beautiful sunshine and today it's started raining and
it's gotten cold again, and because of the success of our Easter Bunnies video -- go
and watch that on YouTube -- because of the success of that one, we've decided to do some
DIY sunshine. DIY sunshine is not hard -- you just need a hire centre near you and and some
helpful friends. What we're going to do is we're going to cut out our sunshine out of
some plywood. I'm going to get on with that in a second -- safety goggles first, and when
I've done that, we'll be having a look at what we do next. Stick with us, folks!
MIKE EDWARDS: There we go -- we've cut the sunshine out. You can see all the rays of
the Sun -- it's getting a bit hot here already! We've cut a hole out in the middle, and the
next thing to do to make it look even more like sunshine is to get an orange carrier
bag from one of your favourite supermarkets, and use double sided tape to stick the carrier
bag to the back of the sunshine. Just to be sure, because it is a bit windy, just to be
sure we're going to staple that in place so that that doesn't come off if the wind picks
up, because we've got some serious sunbathing going on at the minute! I've just been told
by the cameraman that I ought to be wearing safety goggles, and he's quite right. I'm
going to put them on (it might be a little late!) So there we go, that's the sunshine.
We're going to get this set up now and we'll show you what else goes on when we try DIY
sunshine. MIKE EDWARDS: Press the Red One --He's pressed
the Red One!! CAMERAMAN: Two minutes ago.
[LAUGHTER] MIKE EDWARDS: Okay, so the next thing we've
got to do is make it look more like sunshine. Here we go, road marking spray, keep it out
of your eyes and try and keep it off your clothes. Before we get this going properly,
we've got to write to the council to see if we can't get a grant. There you go -- that's
the right colour for sunshine. Follow us through to the next step in a minute.
MIKE EDWARDS: Phase 3, possibly Phase 4, I can't remember, here's the completed sunshine
-- we've fitted some legs on the back so that it stands up but if the camera wants to follow
me along to the piece de resistance, you will see another piece of the apparatus that we
need is an enormous patio heater. This is available from pretty much every hire shop,
but you're best off coming to Hire Standards in Westbury in Wiltshire to get this little
beast here. Then we're going to move the sunshine in front of the patio heater and see what
happens next. MIKE EDWARDS: One thing you've got to be really
careful of -- you might not be able to feel this at home but I promise you that's really
quite warm. When you're making your DIY sunshine, make absolutely sure you've got plenty of
cream on and you're protecting yourself from the Sun. All sorts of things can happen -- you
need to be very, very careful! MIKE EDWARDS: Okay, you've seen how our sunshine
works, but there is a serious side to this Ladies and Gentlemen -- the Sun in this country
if you're not used to it can be very very hot indeed. You saw our sunbather out there
-- he wasn't protected, very silly. You've only got to come to Hire Standards -- you
can buy gallons and gallons of suncream, and let's show you what can happen if you don't
take the right precautions -- And of course, being England, it can rain at any time -- DIY
Sunshine from DIY Doctor!
