Narrator: A provider answers a patient's question
in her office.
I've seen people that get dialysis
out of a tube right here.
Why do I need an AV fistula?
The dialysis through the neck, as you call it,
and through the tube in the neck, is a good temporary.
It's something that we use short-term,
but it's not a good idea in the long run.
And I'll tell you why.
There are several complications
with those tubes that you're talking about.
There's a higher risk of infection,
which would mean you'd need antibiotics
or you would need to go to the hospital.
There's also a higher risk of clotting,
which is also not a good idea
because then we would have to put you on different kinds
of medicines and blood thinners.
In the long run, a fistula is much better
than these tubes in your neck for hemodialysis.
