Scott: When I started my blog,
it was with a simple idea: travel the world, searching for
people whose style define who we are today.
(light music)
My name is Scott Schuman, and I am The Sartorialist.
Growing up in Indiana, the whole world
was presented to me through images.
So when I first went to Milan,
it was like stepping into a dream.
It was on that first trip that I realized that
this world that I had imagined actually existed.
It's their commitment to elegance that makes Milan
so captivating: men, women, different ages.
It's such a part of their culture.
In New York, you never know what you're going to see.
In Milan, you do: classic, subtle Italian style,
but done with such beautiful nuance
that I never get tired of it.
On the first or second day I'd been here, I see a guy,
and he's wearing the most pefectly tailored suit,
holding a bicycle with one hand,
smoking a cigarette with the other.
I thought, "That's so Italian."
Where I grew up in Indiana,
nobody wears a suit and rides a bicycle.
It was really there that I realized
that this idea that I had about The Sartorialist
could actually become a reality.
Whenever I'm in MIlan,
I always like to see my friend, Alessandro Squarzi.
He's the kind of guy that you don't see much
in the media anymore: a little bit tough,
big smile, big heart.
It wasn't until I've been shooting Alessandro
for a while that we actually became friends.
Neither one of us speaks the other's language,
but I think it's the level of respect and curiosity
that we have for each other that breaks that barrier.
Alessandro:
Scott: Alessandro Squarzi is an endless source
of inspiration in terms of how to be a gentleman,
the kind of guy I would like to be.
It's one of the few times where my perception of
the person actually lived up to the reality of who he is.
Alessandro:
Scott: He's too nice.
He's too nice.
Two years ago, end of the day, kind of like this,
I see you about here, riding up on your bike.
Ilaria:
Scott: Did you grow up always feeling
like a specially beautiful young lady?
Ilaria: No.
and these dramatic eyes?
Like did you always feel like that was really
kind of your special gift?
Ilaria:
Scott: In Milan, everybody could have a perfect moment.
When I'm taking a photograph of someone,
I like to create my own image of who this person is.
As much as I'd like to say that these photographs
are about style, whether it's a guy or a girl,
it's really about desire.
The clothes just help create that desire.
Milan is such an incredible city,
and it's become such an important character
in so many of my photographs.
I'll be coming back for years because I feel like
the romance has just begun.
