There's a growing awareness of the damage that asbestos can do to people who work where
the dust is prevalent, but industrial disease claims can also be made by those who suffer
from second hand asbestos.
This is the case with a woman who suffered the heartache of losing her husband to mesothelioma,
only to have her situation compounded after she contracted terminal lung cancer due to
the years spent washing her husband's asbestos-covered work clothes.
Ronald Haxton worked for Philips Electronics for over 40 years before the dangers of asbestos
were known and died in July 2009. Just a couple of years later, his widow Monica experienced
similar symptoms and was diagnosed with malignant mesothelioma last year.
It's thought that the £500,000 industrial disease claim made by Mrs Haxton is the largest
for this kind of case, as she seeks compensation for both her own illness and the loss of her
husband.
