>> DARREN: Hi I’m Darren Kennedy and I’m here at Matalan HQ to meet with their senior design team who are going to be giving me the inside track on what’s hot for spring/summer.
Sarah, you work in one of the most fun departments I’m guessing. Can you tell me a little bit more about what you do?
>> SARAH: I’m the children’s wear design manager.
I mean the product is fantastic. It’s fun to work with. Lot’s of colours and we can express ourselves with trends.
>> DARREN: How important is age appropriateness?
>> SARAH: It’s very important, especially for our Candy, which is our teenage range for girls. It’s important we get people’s feedback. And we’ll ask people around the office. I’m a mum myself, so I’ve got an opinion.
Generally everyone who has children has an opinion on what’s right and what’s wrong, so we’re always aware of that when it comes to designing.
>> DARREN: And what about quality control? Because that’s very important with kid’s clothes. Are they hardwearing pieces?
>> SARAH: They are, definitely. And I can vouch for that because kid’s clothes are always in the wash, they wash really well, easy to dry.
The quality control team always do a really good job. They are tough and they will last long.
>> DARREN: So what trends are we looking at for 2013?
>> SARAH: For girls monochrome is massive. You will see the trend come through on ladies wear, filtering through onto girls wear.
We also got this beautiful botanical story. Florals, photographic, prints, really lovely saturated bright colour pallet.
>> DARREN: How about for the boys?
>> SARAH: For boys we’ve got pop culture. Real 90s trend, it’s quite bright, lots of bold graphics.
>> DARREN: What will the coolest kids on the block be wearing this summer.
>> SARAH: I definitely think dungarees are back in a big way, it’s that whole 80s vibe.
So defiantly for girls, a dungaree with maybe a tie-dye or florescent top and then for boys some really funky graphics and maybe an Aztec print shirt.
>> DARREN: That looks like something I’d wear myself.
Kid’s would wear something that adults wouldn’t dear, so you can let yourself go.
>> SARAH: They like to mix things up, they are so much more confident than they ever used to be.
This is my favourite piece, the leggings. They’re brilliant.
Girl’s especially love leggings, they’re dead easy to wear, really comfortable and they wash really well.
>> DARREN: Ticks all the boxes.
>> SARAH: Definitely.
>> DARREN: Well I hope that’s got you excited for spring/summer. And if you would like some more inspiration on what’s coming up this season, make sure to log onto this week’s Kat’s Closet.
