Erik: What has your work taught you about the value of results driven goals?
Andrew: I think being results driven is essential given the crisis that we face. There's a lot
of different pathways that you could go just talking about issues. I am happy to be part
of an organization that is actually working on solving those problems. We're not always
successful. We have more defeats than victories in a lot of ways, just in the world that we
work in but if we have a culture of trying to drive results, we all feel better about
what we do. And so, I think that, that culture helps me to be a better manager, it helps
me to be a better person in a lot of ways and helps me feel like I'm doing a job and
not just sort of flitting around the periphery.
Erik: What have you found most challenging about adopting results driven goals in a non-profit
organization?
Andrew: I think I am fortunate to work for an organization that is results driven in
a non-profit field because, I don't know if that's universal. I think we work in an organization
that has that culture. We work in an organization that has a lot of, you know, MBAs and we work
very closely with companies, and so then maybe there's a different set of expectations but
also ultimately I think that our donors like that a lot more.
Erik: Yeah.
Andrew: I think foundations like that a lot as foundations are becoming more professionalized
in how they do their giving. They like to look for organizations that are results driven.
There's a lot more scrutiny on the work -- necessarily, on work that non-profits do. So, I think it's
very important to be that way. I think the challenge is, you know, as I said earlier
I think there are, we work in a field where there are more defeats than victories because
we're fighting some pretty tough fights and as long as our donors, as long as our members,
as long as people that support our organization understand that we're fighting some pretty
gnarly battles and we're taking some big risks to get things done, we'll continue to get
their support but the fact that we are results given really helps us to communicate that,
you know, communicate that a little bit better that we are, we're not always gonna be successful
but we're working really hard to do it and we have mechanisms and management in place
that is, you know, really focused on making the world a better place and, you know, we've
got a plan.
