Hi, I'm Debrah DeMirza and I'm at Deluxe a resale clothing boutique in Eugene, Oregon
and today I'm going to show you how to sew on patches. So it depends whether you're doing
decorative or whether you're doing functional. But for decorative patches you can do contrasting
as many colors or shapes as you would like. If you want something that blends in, say
maybe you have a hole in the sleeve or something, you can get something that matches it and
make a nice shape that blends in and using the same color threads. You can do one of
the main things that you have to watch for is what kind of fabric you're sewing onto
what kind of fabric. Obviously, if you have really stretchy fabric and it's going to be
in a place that stretches like on an elbow, you're going to need to find something that
also stretches. So what you need to do is just make sure that you consider that when
you are finding a piece of fabric. This one has the same kind of fabric, so you can move
it in any direction and if you'll see this one is using a very close zigzag stitch. So
what you want to do is use a wide stitch and use a small number on your length to get them
real close together. You can make your own neat patches by cutting out really neat designs
on fabrics and then what they've done is they've bonded them by zigzagging very closely around
the outer edge of a nice piece of fabric. This one happens to give, so you can put this
on a sweater or you can put it on something that's stretchy and then what you can do is
when you apply this to your background fabric, do a close zigzag. Then when you apply it
to whatever garment you're putting it on, you can either go around the edges of this
fabric in a different contrasting color or the same color or you can go over the stitching
that's already done or you can do it whatever way you want. But this is going to secure
the edges to keep them from unraveling when you do the close zigzag stitching. So you
can do all different kinds of neat ideas with that. That's how you would sew on a patch.
