Do you ever watch the sessions of our U.S. Congress on C-Span? Very often it is a charade
of ego, and a parade of posturing.
Observing that, I have thought of how in ancient Locris a man who proposed a law in the assembly
did so on a platform with a rope around his neck. If his law passed, they removed the
rope; if it failed they removed the platform. It is a dramatic lesson in responsibility
and integrity.
More than ever before in our history, we are compelled to think in terms of the entire
human family. We can’t be bound by a narrow self-interest. Making pronouncement about
the pressing problems of our city is not enough. We must get personally involved. Our city
is dependent upon each of us
…to live responsibly, …to support those
less blessed than we, …to give cups of
cold water, …to provide access
to the resources of our community.
This is my word of calling. I’m Maxie Dunnam,
and I believe in Memphis.
