Okay, today is Admitted Student Leader Day Training! Are we excited?!
Yeah!
I need to know about resources, I need to know about the Gorlok.
I need you to talk to everyone you possibly can to know about things on campus, so whatever you need to do... Do it!
Break!
Thanks, Matthew.
I look forward to reading Mark Twain.
"Hi!" "Maybe you can help us out."
"We're trying to figure out what resources the library has to offer, can you help us out?" "Oh I sure can!"
You can check out a book. I'm going to read Mark Twain.
You can sit here and read some great periodicals.
You can grab some coffee.
You can come here and get computer access or use a study room.
But the best-kept secret is over here. Let me show you.
"Hi!" "Hey Marie!"
Hey, Marie, can you tell us what is a Gorlok?"
Well, as you can see, the Gorlok has the face of a loyal St. Bernard, the paws of a speeding cheetah, and the horns of a fierce Buffalo.
It was created by Webster students and chosen by faculty. He embodies everything that Webster stands for.
"Ah, thanks, Marie. Let's go tell everyone." "Alright." "See you guys."
Hey, excuse me, you're a professor, right?
I am. I'm Bruce Umbaugh. I'm on the Philosophy faculty.
What are some of the classrooms like?
Well, come inside. Let me show you.
So this is one of our classrooms. This is not one of the classrooms in a new building. This is in an older building with high ceilings and a fireplace.
You can see there aren't a lot of chairs in the room because the average class size is really small at Webster.
Rather than a lot of big lecture classes, there's a real focus on trying to engage students and help them learn actively and think critically.
"Thanks for the great information." "We gotta go. Thank you. See yah."
Hey, Scott, how does Public Safety keep Webster safe?
Well, I'm glad you asked that Julian.
We patrol 24 hours a day 7 days a week and we also provide Emergency Call Boxes throughout our campuses.
What if I have to walk back from class late at night?
Well, you can call our office at any time of night or day and our officers will meet you there and escort you to your destination.
"Great. Awesome. Thank you." "See you guys."
"Dr. Stroble!" "Hi, how are you doing?" "Good."
"Hey, could you tell us what the best places to eat on campus are?"
Well, you can see what I was going to do today, brown bag, but you know, peanut butter and jelly keep so I may look for some other options.
There's Kaldi's, where you can get coffee in the library and sometimes snacks.
The University Center has like three or four dining choices.
In Sverdrup, Cafe a la Carte which is also a good choice if you want to walk up and get something.
But I'll tell you where the best choices are...
Right around the corner in Marletto's, like there's healthy stuff, soup, and pizza.
There's a salad bar and pizza.
And there's hot entrees and pizza!
You wanna do pizza? Alright, let's go!
"Hi, John!" "Hi!"
Hey, John, what's the best way to get involved on campus?
Well, you should start at the website "involved@webster" which is involved.webster.edu.
It'll tell you about all the clubs that are on campus, the activities that are taking place,
Student Government elections, concerts, films. Everything you want to know is right there. If you don't see something you like with a club, you can start your own.
"We can have an organization of our own?!" "Wow, let's go see what else we can find! Bye John!'
There he is!
"Hey, Ted." "Hey, guys."
I know there's a spring concert coming up with Girl Talk, but are there any other live performances on campus?
Oh, there's tons. Right now I'm getting some tickets for a conservatory show this weekend and tomorrow night I'm going to a repertory theater show.
Oh yeah and of course great speakers like journalist Dan Savage and co-creator of Twitter, Jack Dorsey.
"You're right, I forgot about those. We gotta run, Ted. See yah." "See you later, guys!"
"Dr. Stroble, you're a commuter, right?" "I am a commuter."
What resources are available on campus for commuter students here at Webster?
"Have you been to the commuter lounge? Do you know about that?" "I've never been there." "Well let's go look."
Oh come on in, I'll show you some of the things in the Commuter Lounge.
Yeah, new flatscreen TV, comfy furniture where you can hang out,
microwave to heat up your lunch, even a refrigerator.
And if you bring your books, a locker you can borrow and keep things secure.
And the group you really want to know about is Commuter Council.
And they're all about doing the best thing we can for commuter students so I encourage you to join.
"I better attend one of their meetings." "Oh yeah!"
"Hey, Buck!"
"What's the big deal with living on campus?" "The big deal with living on campus is this: We have the nicest housing system with 350 miles."
"It's one of the nicest, most comfortable, most modern in the Midwest.
If you live on campus, three things are going to happen. 1) You're going to get better grades. 2) You get more connected. 3) You're going to persist through graduation more quickly. So that's the big deal about living on campus. You have to live on campus.
"Oh, wow, thanks Buck! Let's go!" "Alright, whatever."
"Dr. Stroble!" "We know Webster has fourteen athletic teams..." "But do we have any school spirit?"
"Does Webster have any spirit?! Does the Gorlok have gold fur?! Come on in and let's see!"
Defense! Defense! Defense! Defense!
[Cheers]
