What is NIDA hoping to accomplish at the IAS conference in Vienna?
Dr. Nora Volkow, Director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse: What NIDA would like to achieve
is make the public aware of the tremendous importance
that substance abuse has in the transmission of ***,
that actually goes beyond the recognized role
that injection-drug use has an infection for *** to actually understand that drugs,
by themselves, the use of drugs, increases the risk of ***.
That's number one.
Number two, we also want to make the public aware,
particularly the health-care system,
of the importance of treating the substance abusers
that have *** with highly antiretroviral therapy.
And this is relevant because there is the misplaced belief
that treating a person that's a substance abuser with antiretroviral therapy
will lead to poor compliance and bad outcomes.
And as a result of that,
many individuals that suffer from a substance-abuse disorder and are ***-positive
are not provided with a treatment.
The consequences, of course,
are devastating for the person themselves,
as well as, they increase, by not treating them,
the probability that they can infect others.
And thus not treating a substance abuser with *** is negative for the person,
but it also has a negative impact in public health.
