Holidays often mean lots of time spend with family and friends. And also means
lots of food.
What should you do if you're going through cancer treatment
and youre experiencing some side effects? Here are some tips to help.
If you're worried about feeling nauseous at dinner,
Talk to your host about it. Maybe you can join for dessert
to help avoid some of the cooking smells. It's also a good idea
to bring some food along with you that you're comfortable eating based on
whatever side-effects you're dealing with.
Serve yourself. That way you can choose the foods that will help you manage your
side-effects.
You can also choose smaller portion sizes you feel comfortable with.
If you have a sensitive stomach
rich foods can make things worse. Choose plain
foods that are baked or steamed with a little added fat
Try some Turkey with cranberry sauce instead of gravy
Plain rice, baked potatoes or a dinner roll
And add some plain veggies. If your immune system has been compromised by your treatment,
be careful about food safety especially if the food is served buffet-style.
Make sure that hot foods are steaming hot
and cold foods are on ice. If you're not sure how long foods have been left
sitting out
talk to the chef or host. It's a good idea to avoid
some high-risk foods like sushi, deviled eggs and homemade eggnog
Try foods like crackers, chips and salsa,
nuts and cookies. These are safer bets
because they can sit out for longer. If you're usually the hosts but you aren't
feeling your best,
talk to your family and friends and see if someone else can host this year
Or start a new tradition go out to eat.
Remember these tips to help you get through the holidays when you aren't feeling well:
Join for dessert, bring your own dish,
Serve yourself, pick plain foods, remember food safety,
and ask others to host or go out to eat.
