My food budget is going to leave me in greater debt than my college courses. What are some
cheap ways to eat healthy in college?
A five pound bag of apples is around five dollars. Five pounds of bananas is about $3,
while a three pound bag of cuties -
What on Earth are cuties? Other than freshmen girls.
They’re a citrus fruit. Cheap, sweet and easy to peel.
Friends will think I’m weird for having several pound bags of fruit around.
Tell your friends you’re saving money to avoid college debt. If that doesn’t work,
tell them it’s to avoid the dreaded freshman 15.
What else can I do?
Get the campus meal plan. Load up on chicken, vegetables, omelets and the salad bar instead
of burgers, fries and pizza.
And, I suppose, stay away from the dessert bar.
Eat low-sugar granola bars and fruit-filled cereal bars instead of expensive health food
bars.
Yeah, I know people who live off Cliff bars.
Arrange study sessions in the meal hall dining room instead of Starbucks with their muffins
or McDonalds.
I don’t do the cafeteria much. We’re mostly a pizza and Hot Pockets study group.
Don’t default to pizza and soda for a group meal. If you are going to live off Hot Pockets,
get healthy lean pockets instead of the fattier ones and supplement it with fruit.
I could try, but it might not go over well with my room mate.
Learn to cook beans. You can buy several pounds for a dollar.
Do you know the rhymes about beans the magical fruit? I don’t want to literally become
an air bag.
Eat healthy snacks like air popped popcorn over unhealthy ones like chips. Buy lunch
packs of veggies that fit in your dorm fridge and backpack.
What else could I do?
Plan visits home to include Mom’s dinner, instead of eating out with friends. Family
meals tend to be healthier than meals out, and it’s cheaper.
Cool. I could eat her meals while she does my laundry and come way out ahead.
