Hi, this is Ike Pigott with Alabama Power and I wanted to take a quick moment
to warn you about a scheme that spread even further.
We've been talking about this one for a while, but now it's going from or
business customers to where the thieves are targeting our residential customers
so
Here's what they're doing. They call you up and tell you that you have just a few
hours
to settle up your balance -- or Alabama Power's going to cut off your electricity.
They tell you to go down to a convenience store or grocery store
and pick up something called a money-pack (like a disposable debit card)
and they tell you to phone in the information and
if you do -- they're going to have the money within minutes, and it's gone and
you can't get it back.
What makes this even worse now is they've got the ability to spoof your
caller ID so
your caller ID will say "Alabama Power" and it will have our phone number, but
it's not us so we're asking you to be very careful.
If you get a call from somebody telling you that you have to pay your bill right
away,
we're asking you to hang up -- politely hang up --and then call us directly.
