>> Childhood and Early Adolescent Education Program prepares our students for pre-k
through fourth grade teaching opportunities and then we also have
grades four through eight for english and social studies education.
They push the people in the program to be deep thinkers,
but also to be lifelong learners and help them understand that
even though you graduate with the degree, there's always more to learn
and as a result of that program, I was fully prepared
to have my own classroom. I knew a lot about
methods of teaching but also a lot about classroom
management and setting up environment that is conducive to learning.
>> I feel that my experiences at Penn State as a student and also as a partner
have framed my
thinking and philosophies of education
and have
served me very well in a leadership positions. I'm currently k-8
curriculum director, but as principal of an elementary building in
State College,
my experiences at Penn State
framed the leadership philosophies that I applied
in that building
>> It's actually very challenging, intellectual work to be a teacher. It takes more than
just caring about kids.
We want professionals who are able to think about
the emotional, social well-being as well as the academic development of twenty
twenty some students if you're at the elementary level eveyday everyday
for an entire school year and at the secondary level you may be dealing with
a hundred kids or more, with multiple class periods.
>> Really, our goal
is to prepare teacher leaders
We want to prepare teachers who become teacher leaders and we have evidence that
some of our students become teacher leaders fairly early in their careers.
What we mean by being a teacher leader, we the mean a teacher who does things
other teachers don't do
or a teacher who does things that other teachers do, but does them in an
extraordinary way and encourages colleagues to do those similar kinds of things. So that's
really what we're after.
>> The students who come here are really looking for a challenge. They're looking
for an opportunity to make a difference in the lives of
children and we have the faculty that can help them make that happen.
