The legitimacy of Korea's scandal-ridden spy agency is being called into question,...
Prosecutors raided the headquarters of the National Intelligence Service late Monday
over suspicions it fabricated evidence in an espionage case..
Yoo Li-an reports. The case revolves around a former Seoul Metropolitan Government official,
Yoo Woo-seong who was accused of being a North Korean spy.
Yoo was initially cleared but the prosecution appealed the case putting forth new documents
as evidence he traveled to North Korea as late as 2006.
Those documents were provided by the National Intelligence Service.
The case began late last year when the prosecution found those documents it received were faked,...
raising suspicions the NIS had fabricated the documents to set the city government official
up as a spy. Those suspicions gained traction after an
NIS informant claimed he had forged the documents. The informant, identified as Kim, attempted
suicied last week after leaving a note saying the NIS owed him money he was supposed to
receive in return for forging documents. Prosecutors raided the NIS headquarters for
over seven hours on Monday,... to determine whether the spy agency had in fact requested
forged documents of wheter it knew that the documents it received from Kim were faked.
The intensive crackdown came only hours after President Park Geun-hye expressed strong regret
over the scandal,... and called for a thorough investigation into the case.
"The truth behind the incident should be quickly uncovered to relieve the people's suspicion."
This is the second time the prosecution has raided the spy agency since President Park
came into office. The first time was in April last year when
the NIS was suspected of meddling in the 2012 presidential election to drum up support for
Park. Yoo Li-an, Arirang News.
