Marriage is something that we tend to take for granted; and it may be that you were surprised
that this would be a problem for Fred and Gina, at first. After all, nothing in their
photograph suggests that they have a learning disability.
However, as the sidebar links for this Unit show, some people would say that people with
a learning disability lack the mental capacity for the full rights of adults. Fortunately,
it seems that Fred & Gina's right to marry is being respected.
It is likely that nobody would be particularly worried about them if they were planning to
continue to live in supported accommodation; but (as in the case of Dee in Unit 4) this
would not allow them to participate fully in the lifestyle that most of us would associate
with being married.
The questions in the following slides will therefore encourage you to think about how
you would create an environment for Fred & Gina that would allow them to be as independent
as possible -- participating fully in married life -- whilst also ensuring that they are
able to perform all their necessary and desired activities as best as they can.
