Many people are successfully using LinkedIn for their business. It's considered to be
the primary place where you can find business contacts online. It also operates on business
principles and is not nearly as social as Facebook or Twitter. There aren't as many
places to interact on LinkedIn as there are on the other social media sites. More often
than not you will meet people on LinkedIn and then develop the relationship using another
method, such as telephone, in person or another social media platform.
One of the key strategies that you want to do with LinkedIn, is to give recommendations,
ask for recommendations, and make sure you give recommendations that are real.
Give recommendations. Go out there, find people who are doing stuff that you really like.
Talk about why you like it, what's good about it. Give recommendations. Make a point of
going out and finding people to whom you can give a recommendation. People that you know
from other platforms. People that you know from maybe some one-on-one. People in your
local market. Go out there, search for those people, find them and give recommendations.
Give recommendations that are real. It is actually better to say nothing than to go
in and say something like "oh, George is really great, he does a good job". Something that
is so generic, that other people are going to take a look and they're going to think
"that doesn't really mean anything". Giving recommendations that are real means that you're
actually going to talk about something specific that person did or is doing, whether you interacted
with them as a client, as a customer or as a business to business helping each other
out. Make sure you give recommendations that really say something good about the other
person or business.
Ask for recommendations in return. Many people won't even think about giving a recommendation
until you ask and then they'll go "oh, my gosh, of course, I would love to give you
a recommendation". I know that there are a number of people I interact with and I kind
of hit myself on the head; why didn't I think to give them a recommendation. People are
busy. Remember to ask for recommendations from people you interact with and do business
with or for.
Get out there. Get your LinkedIn profile up-to-date, start finding the people who you have interacted
with before on other platforms and in your local market, and you will be able to find
other clients and customers on LinkedIn
