I went to high school in Sweden, at a
school called Kopparlundsgymnasiet. My junior year I got an award that was with academics and
sports in the same thing that I was able to juggle the both of them. My mom is really
proud of me. She always says that hard work pays off. I've been over here now by myself
for three years, so I've been working hard, and living on my own is not that easy in another
country, so she was really happy. I'm gonna get my Associates degree now in the spring, so I'm
graduating from City. Jonna Kallstrom, Associate in Arts with honors. I actually was supposed
to go to Mesa, but then emailed Coach Schaefer, the assistant coach last year at City College,
and I loved her response so I said, "Wow I want to go to City College and play for Coach Taylor."
And now I've played for her for two years.
Wednesdays and Fridays are our game days, so those are the days you can't really take as many classes. You have to go around
your softball schedule. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday I usually have most of my classes, but to
fit it in I have a night class on Thursday night. Softball practice is Monday through Friday,
that's like three to five hours a day, and then I have work around ten to 20
hours a week. Sometimes it feels like I'm missing out on a lot of stuff when I'm really
busy. In the end it all pays off. I think it's all about time management. Some people
learn to have discipline more than others. I don't think I'm that much different than
other people. I know when to have fun, I know when to be serious, I know when to do homework,
I know when I can go out with friends. I know when to do what. I think that's why I have good grades.
I came as a second baseman. We didn't really have a starting catcher. I wanted
to have a good team, and I also wanted playing time, so I told my coach that I wanted to catch.
I put in a lot of work. Coach Bailey, my pitching/catching coach has been there
for me and working a lot with me, making sure that I knew what I was doing being the plate.
She let me try out for the spot. I was the starting catcher since then. I would say that
the coaches have done a lot for me.
I'm moving from San Diego in August. First I'm going to Sweden to play the softball season there.
Hopefully I'm playing in Czech Republic for Sweden 2, for the national team.
But then after that, I am moving to Florida to play for a four-year school.
I want to help other people, being able to organize their life and then also,
with athletics, working with injuries and stuff with athletes pretty much
is what I want to do. Get them back on track.
