Welcome to another Desire2Learn tutorial, today we are going to look at the discussions
forum. Go to Desire2Learn either through my.canisius.edu
or directly by going to d2l.canisius.edu Select the class you want to go to with the
list of classes on the left-hand side. In the upper navigation bar go to Discussions.
You will then have to look through the available discussions to find the appropriate one for
you to post on. Depending on the professor, in the beginning
of each semester there may not be many discussion topics and this will make it easier for you
to find the one you are searching for. To go into a specific discussion topic you
can either click on the discussion topic title or if there are any unread posts on that topic
you can click on "Unread Posts" To create your own post on this topic just
click on the "Start a New Thread" button Here you will enter a "Subject" or title for
your own post (this is required for all new posts)
Then you will fill the body with text, what you write is dependent on how the professor
wants their students to post (this will either be stated in the syllabus and/or on Desire2learn)
Below the body text section is a checkbox to subscribe to this thread; this is used
to get notifications if anyone has responded to the post you create (this is auto-checked
for you). You can add a file or files to your post by
clicking "add attachments" You can upload files from your computer, or
the computer you are working on You can record your own audio
You can Choose an existing file from your locker
The locker is located under the "My Tools" section in the upper navigation bar, it is
called "Locker" In the locker you can upload files for your
computer or the computer you're working in You can also create new files and folders
The files you create are their own web page You must name your file
You can give a description of the file, an overview of it
You have the contents of the file itself (this is what will show up on its own web page)
The folders are very helpful to separate work between classes since the Locker is universal
for all your classes Once you have added all your content and files
you can click "post" to add a new post to the discussion.
Note: students cannot delete any posts that have been posted, but they can be edited by
the student who has posted them. You can also respond to other student's posts
by click on the post title they created and clicking the "Reply to Thread" button
You are also able to reply to a reply in any post.
Subscribing to anyone's post will give you notifications if someone has replied to that
post. When on the "View Topic" page you can filter
and sort the posts. We hope this tutorial what helpful to students
new to the Desire2Learn Discussion Forum.
