I want to save lives because my mum was diagnosed with breast cancer,
and she died when she was 59.
The following year, I was diagnosed with breast cancer.
We all work at the community centre together, and my boss Christine got breast cancer,
and it was just to support her.
I was quite surprised to be told I had breast cancer, but that has meant that
I have wanted to be involved in helping other people
become aware of symptoms of breast cancer
so that other people can be diagnosed quickly.
After having surgery, I answered a questionnaire in a hospital.
After answering the questionnaire, I was put through to Breakthrough Breast Cancer.
Breakthrough Breast Cancer is the UK's leading breast cancer charity,
and we are committed to beating breast cancer.
But our work's only possible due to the time, the dedication, and the commitment of our
supporters who are helping us to make this reality.
With your help, we believe that we can stop some women dying
from some sorts of breast cancer, within the next ten years.
We can only do this with your help.
However much time you have to give, however you want to get involved,
you can change the lives of people affected by breast cancer, by giving your time,
to follow us on Facebook and Twitter, by interviewing patients, by attending events,
or speaking publicly to get our vital message across;
meeting your MP to get their support, or by sharing your story,
or giving out our breast awareness leaflets.
There are quite a lot of opportunities given by Breakthrough Breast Cancer to get involved
in different things, and if it fits with what I'm doing that week or that month
then I'll sign up and say yes.
Fundraising, campaigning, meeting and lobbying MPs,
talking to groups, being a local contact, anything that I know Breakthrough wants.
I attend conferences, I've put motions to the TUC conference,
we've had a stand there recruiting members; I've also become a media volunteer,
because I'm so passionate about the screening programme -
that's how I was diagnosed.
I fundraise, and I'm also involved with patient publications: I review them,
and look at them just to make sure they are easy to understand.
I give my time by being involved in the CAN Change Network, which can be set up
to deal with local issues, to make a difference where there is a local problem.
I feel I make an impact in my community, especially in my black community,
because people see me as someone who has been through cancer,
and they can relate to me, they can talk to me about their experiences and
hopefully they can join Breakthrough Breast Cancer to spread the word.
Every day, 32 women die from breast cancer in the UK.
Please support our work and stop women dying.
It could just be us out there doing nothing, but at least
if we are getting the message across, then it could save somebody's life.
A future free from breast cancer is why I do the work.
I would say you don't have to have had breast cancer:
it's wonderful working with like-minding people.
Even if it's only an email that you can send off on our behalf,
It'll be really worth it.
There's always support on hand, they make it easy for you to get involved.
Speak to someone at Breakthrough Breast Cancer -
you can make a difference.
There is nothing better than you can ever commit to.
